What CeDePesca is

  Our mission

CeDePesca, Centre in Defence of National Fisheries, is a Non-Governmental Organization whose headquarters is in Mar del Plata, the main fishing port in the country. Its mission is to work for a socially, economically and ecologically sustainable fishing activity.

  Course of Development

Since its formation in 1997, CeDePesca succeeded in introducing some important issues into the local and national  level of policy makers and mass media. We have carried out studies related to the changes in the fishing structure, to the Fishing Agreement signed with the European Union, and to the Federal Fisheries Law.

As regards the later in particular, we are especially concerned about the implementation process of the Individual Transferable Quotas system, which we consider that could be environmentally and socially harmful. Moreover, in such cases in which it could be applied, it has to be cautious, transparent and fair.

In support of small-scale fishermen, we work with their representative bodies with the aim of strengthening the sector both socially and economically by making proposals for resources management, and by training their members.

We have also put a lot of effort into denouncing the depletion of hake fishing due to massive access of European factory vessels to our waters, a situation that still remains –although now these vessels fly the national flag- and represents a permanent collapse threat to hake and to thousands of jobs depending on this resource.

CeDePesca is the only Non-Governmental Organization in Argentina specifically devoted to fishery marine resources.

Campaigns:

WHITE CROAKER: ¨LET’S MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR WHITE CROAKER FISHING TO BE SUSTAINABLE.¨

In CeDePesca, we are worry about the degradation process of white croaker populations in the north-eastern littoral of Buenos Aires province. The white croaker fishing problem is extremely big and involves natural reserves such as Samborombón Bay as well as areas under provincial and national jurisdictions; besides, this resource is shared with Uruguay. On the other hand, it can be defined as a fishery which is socially very active and creates employment not only in the commercial fisheries sector but also in the tourist one.

HAKE: ¨DO NOT LET US BE CAUGHT OFF OUR GUARD: HAKE FOR ARGENTINIAN PEOPLE.¨

Gigantic factory vessels disregard legislation on hake conservation by means of appeals for protection, endangering the sustainability not only of the species, but also of thousands of fishermen and Argentinian male and female workers’ employments. THIS CANNOT BE ALLOWED.
